Gallery: Trip To Great Groves: Harvesting Oak

Great Groves wood is classified as a plantation on an ancient woodland site ( PAWS) which means it has been continually forested, since at least 1600 despite active forestry ( cutting and planting) occurring in this time. This means the woodland has a rich flora and fauna. Students visited to split Oak rounds that I had previously cut for them with a chainsaw. The butts are 18 inches tall and cut from the main trunk so are quite big and heavy so it was a good job the students were feeling strong! First they had to split the rounds in half using first an axe to open the grain, and then splitting wedges to split the rounds first in half and  then into quarters to make them light enough to take away.
